.Eric the Eagle (or is it Bob Hawk ?) on a maritime platform somewhere in Moreton Bay ... Owing to the distance (even with a quality zoom lense at full stretch), the focus was not as sharp as I would have liked, so the only thing to do was to stylise it ... quite liked the outcome ...

Wowee ! That's sure pushing the boundaries, but quite effective.
Let's face it LG .. I think 'pushing the boundaries' is probably an understatement .. more like a complete no-no .. but all the same, it was do this or toss it out, and I find it hard to do that :)
Indeed. If you're seeking long distance shots Andy, you could look at a 2x converter. This is a small lens extension unit that fits between the main lens and the camera body, and doubles the effective length ( and power ) of the main lens. So if you have a 300mm lens, a 2x converter will double it to 600mm. It's best to use a small tripod to maximise stability. Put anti-shake switch on.
Forgot to mention... using a 2x converter ( aka teleconverter )also has a loss-effect as it will cut out light and require an increase of 2 f-stops. I have used one on a number of occasions in film format SLR cameras and as long as you have a sufficiently strong light source, it works well.
Wonderful advice thanks LG .. am on the hunt for one as we speak ! :)
